Heterotroph

Heterotroph

A heterotroph is an organism that cannot fix carbon or synthesize its own nourishment, and therefore must consume other organisms for food. It must eat other organisms in order to survive, grow, and reproduce. The Florida scrub lizard in this photograph consumes mostly insects, spiders, and other small arthropods.
