Modified leaf of a plant

The spines of a cactus are modified leaves. The spines serve almost no part in photosynthesis, which is mostly done by the stem of the cactus. Other than the spines, there are small leaves that do not serve in the process of photosynthesis, but produce plant hormones. The spines of the cactus serve as a defense from its predators, animals trying to get to its fleshy stem that is filled with water.
