On the trunk of this tree are lichen. Lichen exists as a complex relationship between algae of cyanobacteria along with fungi. Scientists often name lichen as individual species even though they are composed of a mutualistic relationship. As the fungus provides a habitat for the bacteria or algae, it receives nutrients from it in return. Lichens are able to live anywhere with little to no soil as well as in harsh climates.
