Gymnosperm Leaf

Gymnosperm Leaf

There are two groups of plants that have seeds: Angiosperms and Gymnosperms. Angiosperms have flowers and fruits to protect the seeds and gymnosperms do not. In fact, “Gymnosperm” literally means “naked seed.” The seeds of a gymnosperm are not made in specialized chambers unlike the seeds of angiosperms. This picture is of a gymnosperm leaf that belongs to a Pine tree. Pine trees belong to a specific group of Gymnosperms called Conifers. Instead of having specialized chambers for seeds, and fruits or flowers, pine trees have cones to help them reproduce. The seeds of the gymnosperm grow on the modified leaves of the plant, in a cone (at least for the Pine tree.)
