Modified Stem of a Plant

Image

Many plants have adaptations that help them survive. Some plants have modified stems. For example, plant bulbs, like the onion above, are considered modified stems. The edible part displayed in the picture— the part that most of us recognize as an onion— is actually layers of enlarged leaves. These leaves function in food storage and surround a short stem. Even though onions grow underground, the bulb is part of the shoot system.
