Gymnosperm leaf

Gymnosperms are naked seed plants, meaning that the seeds are not enclosed in an ovary as they are in angiosperms.  The tree shown above is a pine tree, and the leaves of this tree are actually the pine needles.  Pine needles are thin and quite pointy, which is probably why they are called needles.  This tree also produces cones, which aid in seed dispersal.
