As I approached the spider in the picture, I decided to touch the web. Immediately, the spider reacted and began to move away from my hand. The spider’s reaction and movement away from the stimulus is known as taxis. Taxis is directed movement away or toward a stimulus. It can, but isn’t always used for larger animals since it is a term mainly for microorganisms and bacteria. Another example of animal taxis is the reaction of a bird if you get too close.
