Exoskeleton (insect-picture will not upload)

An exoskeleton is an external skeleton that protects the animal and provides points of attachment for the muscles that move the appendages. This nonliving covering, or cuticle, is constructed from layers of protein and chitin. It is thick around the head to protect the brain and and paper thin in other locations, such as the joints.
