An enzyme is a biological catalyst. A catalyst is a compound that speeds up or slows down a reaction but is left unaffected: It doesn’t change in the reaction. Enzymes are vital to biology and life, because without them, a simple and vital process like cellular respiration would take days. This plant contains many different enzymes that allow it to carry out photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and other processes important for its survival.
