In the middle of this picture, there is a bird flying across the lake. In order to fly the bird uses energy. Glycogen serves as a form of energy storage in animals. Glycogen is a multibranched polysaccharide. The Glycogen reserve can be mobilized at any moment to be used if the body suddenly needs glucose.
