Endosperm literally means “in seed”. Endosperm refers to a nutrient-rich tissue formed during fertilization of an angiosperm. The endosperm provides nourishment for the developing seed. The picture shows the endosperm of the Medjool Date, the fruit of the date palm Phoenix dactylifera. Medjool dates are very popular in Muslim culture during the Islamic month of Ramadan, where Muslims fast for 30 days. It is traditional to break the fast with the date. However, Medjool dates have become popular because of their sweetness due to the high concentrations of glucose, sucrose, and fructose used to feed the developing seed.
