Ethylene

Many plants use ethylene as a hormone in order to accelerate the ripening, growth, and maturation of a fruit. The banana in the photograph above naturally releases ethylene during its ripening process. Ethylene is an organic compound consisting of a hydrocarbon. The molecular formula for ethylene stands as C2H4. Naturally, ethylene is a colorless flammable gas. Ethylene is used commonly in the chemical and agricultural industries. Ethylene has been used in many industrial procedures including polymerization, oxidation, alkylation, and hydration. This hydrocarbon is known as the simplest alkene. Ethylene is produced in vast quantities around the world.
