Long Day Plant - Lettuce

This lettuce plant is an example of a long day plant. Long day plants flower in late spring or early summer, when there is more light during the day. Long day plants are the opposite to short day plants, who flower in late summer, fall or winter. Long day plants include spinach, lettuce, iris and most types of cereal grains. In reality, it is the length if the night which controls the long-day plants.
