Mutualism

Mutualism

Symbiosis is the interaction of 2 different organisms that live in close proximity with one another. There are 3 types of symbiosis commonly found in nature. This photo illustrates mutualism, or symbiosis in which both organisms benefit. In this photograph, the bee in the center is collecting nectar from the Moringa oleifera flower, which it makes into food. As the bee retrieves nectar, pollen from the flower gets stuck on the bee. When the bee moves to another flower, the pollen is transferred to that flower, pollinating it and allowing it to reproduce. In this way, the bee is given something to eat and the flower a way to reproduce, forming a mutualistic relationship that benefits both organisms.
