Rhizome

A rhizome is a stem that grows horizontally underground.  It can produce new shoots that sprout like baby plants.  This is a picture of a ginger plant (which is pickled and added to plates of sushi- quite delicious).  When conditions are harsh and the sprouts die, the plant can still survive underground.
